Viticulturist Chad Douglas brings his practical, agricultural up-bringing coupled with over five years viticultural experience in Central Otago and Europe, complemented by a Masters of Science degree to Tarras Vineyards. Chad's Masters Degree researched the climatic limits of viticulture in New Zealand. After his studies Chad embarked on his OE, taking him to the goldmines of Western Australia to pay off student loans and then onto the vineyards in the Loire valley, France, for two vintages. Upon returning to New Zealand Chad headed straight back to grape farming in Central Otago. He demonstrated that he hadn't lost any viticultural skills while away with a second place finish in the 2006 New Zealand Young Viticulturist of the year competition. Chad manages the Company's two vineyard sites along with his skilled and dedicated team. His viticultural philosophy considers that the each vineyard site is unique, requiring specific managing according to their distinctive subtleties particularly in combination with the challenges that Pinot Noir provides. "The ability to be flexible is important, we would all like to be proactive but the reality of all farming and in particular with grapevines and their sensitivity to climate, means we have to be reactive. The only way to succeed is to be well organized, get to know your site, anticipate what could happen. It is also important to try new practices with the importance of sustainable agricultural practices and efficiency. The challenge and drive required to succeed with it endears hard work and commitment. I see this as a major motivation to be involved with Pinot Noir in Central Otago, especially when you can enjoy the fruits of your labour along the way." |
